Avalanche Activity

As a consequence of new snow and warming a considerable danger of dry and moist avalanches will be encountered in some regions.

The fresh snow as well as the wind slabs will become increasingly prone to triggering in all aspects above approximately 2200 m. The fresh wind slabs can be released, even by a single winter sport participant and reach medium size. As a consequence of warming during the day, the likelihood of dry and moist avalanches being released will increase gradually also on steep shady slopes above approximately 2000 m. As a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation moist small and medium sized avalanches are to be expected as the day progresses, even large ones in isolated cases. The avalanche danger should be investigated very thoroughly in the relevant locality.

Snowpack Structure

In particular at higher altitudes snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. Towards its base, the snowpack is faceted and its surface consists of loosely bonded snow lying on a crust that is strong in many cases, especially on steep shady slopes. On steep sunny slopes below approximately 2800 m only a little snow is lying. The new snow is lying on soft layers on steep shady slopes above approximately 2000 m. More recent wind slabs have formed especially adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls and generally at elevated altitudes, especially above approximately 2200 m.

Significant decrease in avalanche danger as the temperature drops.
