Gradual increase in danger of dry avalanches as a consequence of new snow and strong wind.

Over a wide area 30 to 40 cm of snow, and up to 80 cm in some localities, will fall until Monday above approximately 1600 m. The wind will be strong. The fresh snow as well as the wind slabs that are forming during the snowfall will become increasingly prone to triggering. The snowpack is unfavourably layered. Adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. Several slab avalanches have been released in the last few days.

The weather conditions will facilitate a slow strengthening of the snowpack.

As a consequence of new snow and strong wind the prevalence and size of the avalanche prone locations will increase. Even emptied starting zones will be replenished as a consequence of snowfall and wind, in particular along the border with France and along the border with Switzerland. Especially on very steep slopes and on wind-loaded slopes medium-sized and, in isolated cases, large natural avalanches are to be expected. Here the avalanches can be triggered in deep layers of the snowpack and reach very large size. Single winter sport participants can release avalanches. Caution is to be exercised on steep slopes, and in gullies and bowls, and behind abrupt changes in the terrain. The conditions are precarious for backcountry touring and other off-piste activities outside marked and open pistes.
