A critical avalanche situation will be encountered over a wide area. In particular along the border with France and along the border with Switzerland the avalanche prone locations are more widespread.

The avalanche danger will not decrease for the time being. The large quantity of fresh snow as well as the wind slabs that are forming in all aspects represent the main danger. Over a wide area 20 to 30 cm of snow will fall until Thursday above approximately 2000 m.

Insidious avalanche situation with three overlapping avalanche problems: fresh snow, wind-blown snow and persistent weak layers. As a consequence of new snow and strong wind natural avalanches are to be expected, even quite large ones. The fresh wind slabs can be released easily or naturally in particular on north to east to south facing aspects. Weak layers in the old snowpack are treacherous. In some places the avalanches can be triggered in deep layers of the snowpack and reach large size. In some cases, they can reach as far as the valley bottom in particular in the typical avalanche paths. Remotely triggered avalanches are possible. Whumpfing sounds and the formation of shooting cracks when stepping on the snowpack serve as an alarm sign.

Tuesday: 5 to 10 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, fell in the early morning above approximately 1600 m. 25 to 30 cm of snow will fall until Wednesday above approximately 1800 m. In particular, along the borders, the amounts of fresh snow will be greater, with peaks of 50-80 cm. The weather conditions will give rise to unfavourable bonding of the snowpack. The large quantity of fresh snow and the wind slabs that are forming during the snowfall are bonding poorly with the old snowpack in some places at intermediate and high altitudes. Faceted weak layers exist in the old snowpack in particular on west, north and east facing slopes.
