Avalanche Activity

Forecast Snow Stability: Unstable windslab will be present and continue to develop through the period mainly on North-West through North to South-East aspects above 800 metres. Fragile cornices will be present above these aspects. There will be a period of instability towards the end of the afternoon when wet snow instabilities will develop. Avalanches and cornice collapse will be likely at this time. Windward aspects will remain stable. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: There will be gale force South-Westerly winds and snow showers. These will turn to rain at gradually higher elevations during the afternoon. The freezing level will be around 400 metres overnight, rising through the day to above summit height by the end of the period. Observed Weather Influences: There were very strong West-South-Westerly winds and snow showers to increasingly low levels through the day. The freezing level was dropping, around 700 metres at midday. ObservedSnowStability: The snowpack has consolidated slightly in the milder overnight conditions but instabilities persist in windslab mainly on North-West through North to South-East aspects above 900 metres. Slopes exposed to the strong winds remain firm and icy. Cornices are fragile and prone to collapse. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
