At elevated altitudes a moderate avalanche danger will prevail.

The new snow of the last few days represents the main danger. Avalanches can in some places be released by people and reach medium size. The number and size of avalanche prone locations will increase with altitude. In particular on north facing slopes avalanches can release the weakly bonded old snow as well and reach large size in isolated cases. Careful route selection is advisable.

The Avalanche Warning Service currently has only a small amount of information that has been collected in the field, so that the avalanche danger should be investigated especially thoroughly in the relevant locality.

On very steep sunny slopes moist snow slides are possible. Below approximately 2600 m individual wet and gliding avalanches are possible, in particular medium-sized ones.

Snowpack Beneath the fresh fallen snow of recent days the old snow cover on north-facing slopes below approximately 2700 m, in the other aspects up to over 3000 m, is thoroughly wet. In the southern part of the Valais and in Grisons more than anywhere else, as well as from place to place in the other regions of Switzerland, there are still pronounced weakened layers evident deeply embedded inside the snow cover. As temperatures have dropped, however, the activity of wet-snow avalanches has diminished. At heightened altitudes, dry-snow avalanches can be triggered from the fresh snow and freshly generated snowdrifts more than anywhere else. In isolated cases these releases can sweep away the entire snow cover and grow to large size. Observed weather review Saturday, 13.05.2023 Skies were variably cloudy. Intermittent shower-like precipitation was registered which fell as snow above 2200 m. Fresh snow Above 2600 m on the Main Alpine Ridge from Nufen Pass as far as the Bernina Pass and southwards therefrom: 10 to 15 cm, in the other regions of Switzerland, mostly less. Temperature The zero-degree level at midday lay at 2400 m. Wind Winds shifted from northeasterly to southerly, blowing intermittently at moderate strength in the high alpine regions. Weather forecast through Sunday, 14.05.2023 Skies are expected to be predominantly overcast. Particularly in the inneralpine and the southern regions, bright intervals are possible. Above 2200 m intermittent snowfall is anticipated. Fresh snow Above 2600 m: 5 to 15 cm. Temperature The zero-degree level will lie at approximately 2500 m. Wind Winds will be predominantly light to start with, blowing at moderate strength from northerly directions in the high alpine regions during the course of the day. Outlook through Tuesday, 16.05.2023 On Monday, skies will be heavily overcast. Precipitation is expected over widespread areas. Only in the southern regions will it be quite sunny. For Tuesday the weather forecast is still quite uncertain. Skies will probably be heavily overcast accompanied by frequent precipitation in the northern regions. The snowfall level will lie at 2000 m on Monday, at 1800 m on Tuesday. On the northern Alpine Ridge, approximately a half-metre of fresh snowfall is expected overall at high altitudes. In the high alpine regions more than anywhere else, the danger of dry-snow avalanches is expected to increase. In case of bright intervals, moist slides can be expected at high altitudes and in the high alpine regions.
