Regions: Glacier.

Happy Easter! Recent storm snow is settling into a slab in some locations. Take the time to evaluate the snowpack before committing to your line.

Weather Forecast

Flurries today with accumulation around 6cm. Freezing level should rise to 1300m with alpine highs of -6C accompanied by S winds up to moderate speed.

Snowpack Summary

70cm of storm snow at 1900m in the past week. Strong S'ly winds redistributed the new snow loading lee features. Our field trip around 2100m produced whumphing on planar S'ly features. Storm snow is settling into a cohesive slab on a buried crust down about 30 to 70cm on all aspects up to 2000m, and higher on solar aspects.

Avalanche Summary

An avalanche cycle on March 30th produced numerous avalanches to size 3 in the highway corridor. Evidence of this same cycle were observed in the west end of the park with many of the slides running mid storm and debris already being partially buried.

Confidence

Due to the number of field observations

Avalanche Problems

Storm Slabs

Storm slabs may be susceptible to human triggering. Steep S aspects where the slab may sit on a sun crust and wind loaded features on N and E aspects are the main concern.
Watch for whumpfing, hollow sounds, and shooting cracks.Minimize exposure to steep Southerly slopes.

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: All elevations.

Likelihood: Likely

Expected Size: 1 - 2.5
