Avalanche Activity

Especially in regions exposed to heavier precipitation and above approximately 2500 m the avalanche prone locations are more prevalent and the danger is slightly greater.

The new snow and wind slabs of Tuesday can be released by a single winter sport participant above approximately 2500 m. The prevalence of avalanche prone locations and likelihood of triggering will increase with altitude. These avalanche prone locations are to be found especially on very steep slopes and adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas. In particular on very steep slopes and at intermediate and high altitudes medium-sized natural avalanches are possible. Dry avalanches can be released in near-surface layers. In particular on very steep sunny slopes and at the base of rock walls small and medium-sized moist loose snow avalanches are possible as a consequence of solar radiation.

Snowpack Structure

20 to 30 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, fell on Tuesday above approximately 2400 m. As a consequence of highly fluctuating temperatures and snowfall above approximately 2300 m and the occasionally strong wind, a sometimes unfavourable avalanche situation developed on Tuesday. The near-surface layers of the snowpack represent the main danger. Isolated occasionally large moist avalanches have been released as a consequence of the rain.

Tendency

In particular on very steep sunny slopes small and medium-sized moist and wet avalanches are possible as a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation.
