Highlights

The general avalanche hazard is MODERATE above an elevation of 8,000 feet. Unstable slabs up to two feet in depth lie upon a base of weak, faceted snow. New snow and southwest winds will increase the load on these slabs, increasing their depth and susceptibility to failure. These slabs could be triggered by the first skier or snow machine to cross a steep slope or after a slope has seen multiple tracks. Evaluate terrain and snow stability carefully. At the lower elevations, where there is significantly less snow, the general avalanche hazard is LOW.

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )Snowfall is expected overnight and into Monday with four to six inches possible by Monday evening. Temperatures will cool overnight to near 20 before rising slightly on Monday. Southwesterly ridgetop winds will increase overnight to 20 to 25 miles per hour.In the Teton area, the general avalanche hazard is expected to remain CONSIDERABLE at the upper elevations (9,000 to 10,500 feet), and MODERATE at the mid elevations (7,500 to 9,000 feet). Backcountry riders and skiers could trigger surface slabs two to three feet in depth in steep terrain where early season snow persisted. New snow and windy conditions will increase the load on these slabs, increasing their depth and susceptibility to failure, either on approach or after a slope has been crossed several times.Above 8,000 feet in the Greys River/ Southwest Trails and Togwotee Pass/ Continental Divide Trails areas, the general avalanche hazard is expected to be MODERATE in the morning and will rise during the day as new snow and southwest winds increase the load on a weak snowpack. In these areas, a shallower snowpack has developed weaker facets, but also smaller slab depths. Otherwise, the avalanche conditions are very similar to those in the Tetons.
