Prolonged dry periods in November and December have created very poor snowpack structure that is very weak. The weak snow is now buried 1-2 feet deep beneath the 22 inches of snow that fell since Jan 4th. New snow yesterday with strong west winds stressed the weak snow and primed slopes to avalanche. Slides can be triggered remotely from gentle terrain above, below, or to the side of steep slopes snd may occur on slopes with trees. Wind loaded areas have the highest likelihood of triggering. Obvious signs of instability such as cracking and collapsing will help confirm the presence of unstable snow.
