Highlights

Snow and avalanche conditions are stagnant as we slide into an early end to the winter.

The danger rating is MODERATE on steep slopes above 9500' that face northwest, north, northeast and east.

Chances for triggering an avalanche continue to decrease but there is still a chance you could trigger an avalanche that breaks into old weak snow from January.

    There is still a minor chance that a person could trigger an avalanche that breaks into weak faceted snow that formed in January. The continued warm weather is helping stabilize the snowpack, but if you dig down into the snowpack, you'll still find a layer of dry facets on high-elevation northerly-facing slopes. The hand hardness of the weak layer is increasing, suggesting more stable conditions. At this point, it seems pretty unlikely that a person will trigger an avalanche, but............

Snow and Weather

General Conditions: Temperatures were in the low 40s on Thursday and only dropped down to around freezing overnight. It's been slightly windy from the west. There's been gusts to 55 mph at the 10,000 foot level. Snow conditions are typical springtime conditions. The snow surface is frozen up in the morning, then things get wet as the day progresses. The only thing that's not typical is that we're at least a month ahead of schedule.

Mountain Weather: The wind looks like it slows down a bit today, then ramps up again on Saturday. Today, we'll see highs into the mid to upper 40s. A storm trough clips northern Utah Saturday evening, which will bring cooler temperatures through Sunday. A strong ridge of high pressure moves in next week, bringing very warm weather.
