Expect to find multiple generations of soft and stiff wind slabs in exposed terrain. Monday morning, I saw at least 20 relatively small wind slab avalanches in Croy Canyon. Several observers in the Soldier Mountains reported avalanches that failed in heavily wind loaded areas sometime Sunday night or early Monday morning. Natural wind slabs failed during the same time frame in the mountains above the Wood River Valley (photo at right). While most of the drifts have had a day or two to stabilize, you will be able to trigger some of them. The size and extent of the wind slabs increase as you move up in elevation; in alpine terrain, I would expect to find 2-5 foot thick drifts.
Winds shift more southerly and could increase this afternoon, possibly producing a new crop of wind slabs. Ben's video from a couple of days ago (click here) drives home how quickly wind can move large amounts of snow.
Look for smooth pillows, dunes, and wave-like features on the snow surface to identify wind-loaded areas. If you feel the snow become stiffer as you travel or see cracks shooting out from your sled or board(s), pay close attention to slope angles.
