Highlights

As a consequence of the northwesterly wind the wind slabs will increase in size moderately until the evening. In the regions exposed to heavier precipitation and on wind-loaded slopes the danger is a little higher. Older wind slabs will be covered with new snow and therefore difficult to recognise.

Avalanche Activity

Until the evening the wind will be moderate to strong. As a consequence of the northwesterly wind the wind slabs will increase in size moderately until the evening. In the regions exposed to heavier precipitation the danger is a little higher. The somewhat older wind slabs will be covered with new snow in some cases and therefore difficult to recognise. They can be released in isolated cases above the tree line. On wind-loaded slopes and in gullies and bowls, and behind abrupt changes in the terrain the situation is more precarious. Weak layers exist in the old snowpack especially on north, northeast and northwest facing slopes. Low and intermediate altitudes as well as wind-protected sunny slopes: Sunshine and high temperatures gave rise on Thursday to moistening of the snowpack.

Snowpack Structure

In particular above the tree line snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. The fresh and somewhat older wind slabs can be released in isolated cases and generally at elevated altitudes. Especially shady slopes where weaknesses exist in the old snowpack are unfavourable. Low and intermediate altitudes as well as wind-protected sunny slopes: The snowpack is favourably layered.
