Triggering or getting caught in a wind slab avalanche is likely on Saturday. Light winds are expected to continue to subtly shape the snowy landscape, and soft slabs will abound on mid to upper elevation slopes. Friday’s reactive slabs were soft and shallow, and there is a good chance you may find more like them on Saturday. However, the possibility of wind slabs failing as deep as the Solstice Crust buried 1-2+ feet below the surface is not out of the question.
Cooler temperatures and light winds could mean that this low-density snow will pose more of a challenge for identifying wind slabs. Your usual clues such as textured snow or pillows, or seeing shooting cracks may not be as obvious. Checking the snow surface layers with hand pits and digging down to the solstice crust and completing stability tests are your best way to identify the problem. Use small test slopes to see how reactive the snow is. We’ve received well over a foot of snow in the last 4 days and we saw recent avalanches (bulls-eye clues). Unless you’re well trained and absolutely certain about a steep slope you’re heading out on, stick to terrain less than 35 degrees.
A snowboarder triggered soft wind slab avalanche which occurred in the neighboring West North zone, with similar conditions, on Friday. The party had already been on two slopes and had similar experiences on the previous slopes. This one took the snowboarder for a ride and they were thankfully unhurt.
