LO for 15/1. Significant deposits of poorly bonded windslab on NW,N to E aspects above 900m. Unstable cornices. Considerable hazard.
Forecast Snow Stability: Significant areas of unstable windslab will remain in wind-sheltered locations such as gullies and coire rims above 900 metres. Most affected will be North-West through North to East aspects. Some substantial and fragile cornices will remain on these aspects. On wind exposed locations on other aspects the snowpack will tend to be firm, hard and stable. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.
Forecast Weather Influences: After some light overnight snow a generally dry day is expected. North-Westerly winds will ease. It will turn colder with the freezing level dropping from around 600 metres to around 200 metres. Observed Weather Influences: Heavy and frequent snow showers fell through the day. Southerly winds veered to the South-West and strengthened. The freezing level was around 750 metres. ObservedSnowStability: Fresh areas of unstable windslab were deposited through the day onto wind-sheltered locations. Most affected were North-West through North to East aspects above 900 metres. Fresh cornices above these aspects were unstable. Below 900 metres the snowpack was damper, and stability better. Evidence of a recent cornice triggered avalanche was noted on an North-Easterly aspect at an altitude of 1200 metres. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
