Snowpack Structure

The surface of the snowpack will freeze to form a strong crust and will soften earlier than the day before. The high temperatures as the day progresses will give rise to rapid moistening of the snowpack in particular at intermediate altitudes. The rather small wind slabs are poorly bonded with the old snowpack above approximately 2400 m. Adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas as well as in high Alpine regions snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. Individual weak layers exist in the bottom section of the snowpack in shady places that are protected from the wind, in particular on shady slopes at high altitude.

Avalanche Activity

Significant increase in danger of moist and wet avalanches as a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation. In addition the wind slabs should be taken into account.

The early morning will see sometimes favourable conditions. As a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation moist avalanches are possible as the day progresses, even medium-sized ones. This applies in particular at the base of rock walls as well as below approximately 2700 m. In addition the more recent wind slabs in particular adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls are prone to triggering in some cases still. These are mostly small and can only be released by large loads in most cases. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in steep terrain in high Alpine regions and at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack. The avalanches can be released in deep layers of the snowpack and reach quite a large size.
