Avalanche Activity

GC22/3. Gale S winds, FL 800m to 1000m. Unstable windslab on NW, N, NE, E aspects above 800m. Cornices forming. Av Hazard Moderate.

Forecast Snow Stability: Windslab will form in wind sheltered locations on North to North-East aspects above 800 metres with cross-loading affecting North-West and East aspects. Accumulations are not expected to be extensive but where this windslab forms on the old snowpack it will be unstable. Greatest accumulations will be on steep slopes, around gully tops and coire rims. Cornices will begin to form. Areas of old snowpack exposed to the wind will begin to refreeze. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Overnight rain, heavy at times, becomes increasingly wintery with snow down to 800 metres. Strong Southerly winds increase gale to severe gale by morning. During the day snowfall becomes lighter with showers in the afternoon as the freezing level rises to around 1000 metres. The predominantly South-Westerly winds will ease slightly. Observed Weather Influences: The overnight rain cleared during the morning, becoming drier and brighter with sunny spells and showers through the day. Light South-Westerly winds with the freezing level above the summits. ObservedSnowStability: The remaining snowpack is wet and thawing at all elevations and is generally stable. Most cover remains in high Northern corries. The avalanche hazard is Low.
