Excellent ski quality out there in sheltered locations. Watch out in open tree line and alpine terrain where the wind is scouring and loading. Building new windslabs

During the day tomorrow, -15 will be the day time high and the temps will drop down to -25 or so for the following days. The winds will be moderate out of the South West. Tuesday will have flurries approx 5cm

Snowpack Summary

10-15cm new snow sits on top of the cold snap faceted surface. Tree line today showed buried windslabs that were not reactive to our tests or travel. Good ski quality in sheltered locations

  • Watch for newly formed and reactive wind slabs as you transition into wind affected terrain.
  • Seek out wind sheltered terrain below treeline where you can avoid wind slabs and find great riding.

Problems

Wind Slabs

Wind Slab avalanches are the release of a cohesive layer of snow (a slab) formed by the wind. Wind typically transports snow from the upwind sides of terrain features and deposits snow on the downwind side. Wind slabs are often smooth and rounded and sometimes sound hollow, and can range from soft to hard. Wind slabs that form over a persistent weak layer (surface hoar, depth hoar, or near-surface facets) may be termed Persistent Slabs or may develop into Persistent Slabs.
