Avalanche problems

  • Gliding snow

    • All elevations

Snowpack Structure

On Friday it will be exceptionally warm. The snowpack will be generally moist. Sunny slopes: The surface of the snowpack will freeze to form a strong crust and will already soften in the late morning. Shady slopes and above approximately 2000 m: The surface of the snowpack will hardly soften at all. There is a danger of falling on the hard snow surface.

Tendency

Saturday: Outgoing longwave radiation during the night will be quite good. As the temperature drops there will be a decrease in the danger of gliding avalanches to level 1 (low).

Avalanche Activity

Gliding avalanches are the main danger.

The early morning will see favourable avalanche conditions. As the day progresses as a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation there will be a gradual increase in the danger of gliding avalanches to level 2 (moderate). The avalanche prone locations for gliding avalanches are to be found on very steep sunny slopes in all altitude zones. Caution is to be exercised in areas with glide cracks.
