Regions: Glacier.

Watch for an increasing avalanche danger through the weekend as more storm snow loads the weak Feb 22 surface hoar layer.

Weather Forecast

5cm more storm snow expected this morning accompanied by moderate W wind then cloudy with a chance of flurries for the afternoon. Freezing levels rising to 1100m. Another 10cm of snow expected through the day on Sunday with SW winds light gusting to strong. Increasing avalanche danger through the weekend.

Snowpack Summary

15cm+ storm snow has now buried the February 22 surface hoar layer. This layer is widespread accept on steep solar aspects where sun crust has formed. On shaded slopes expect 30cm of soft snow over a well settled mid-pack. Storm snow hides variable stubborn wind slab in exposed alpine elevations along ridge-tops and exposed tree-line features.

Avalanche Summary

Three avalanches to size 2 observed in the highway corridor. MCR report of natural triggered windslab to size 2 out of the Asulkan Hut area from the last couple of days.

Avalanche Problems

Storm Slabs

Developing storm slab over the freshly buried Feb 22 Surface hoar. In wind effected surface snow this layer will be more sensitive and prone to propagate. Human triggering of the fresh storm slab is likely.

  • The new snow will require several days to settle and stabilize.
  • Use caution on open slopes and convex rolls
