Avalanche Activity

Gradual increase in avalanche danger as a consequence of new snow and strong wind.

Up to 20 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, fell in the last few days above approximately 1800 m. Above approximately 1300 m snow will fall from midday. The wind will be strong over a wide area. As a consequence of new snow and a strong wind from southerly directions, avalanche prone wind slabs will form in the afternoon in particular at intermediate and high altitudes. In all aspects and above approximately 1500 m medium-sized and, in isolated cases, large avalanches are to be expected as the snowfall becomes more intense. Ski touring and other off-piste activities, including snowshoe hiking, call for great caution and restraint.

Snowpack Structure

Over a wide area 15 to 20 cm of snow, and up to 30 cm in some localities, fell on Tuesday above approximately 1600 m. This snow is poorly bonded with the old snowpack in some places. Above approximately 1000 m snow will fall until Sunday over a wide area. The new snow is bonding only slowly with the old snowpack. The southerly wind will transport the new snow significantly. Over a wide area there is still a very large amount of snow.
