Avalanche Activity

On wind-loaded slopes a dangerous avalanche situation will persist. The danger of dry and moist avalanches will increase during the day.

As a consequence of snowfall and the occasionally storm force northwesterly wind, fresh snow drift accumulations formed during the last few days. This applies in particular in the regions exposed to the foehn wind above the tree line, and adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls. The avalanche-prone wind slabs can be released even by a single winter sport participant. Along the border with France the avalanche prone locations are more widespread and the danger is greater. On wind-loaded slopes and in starting zones where no previous releases have taken place medium-sized and, in many cases, large powder avalanches are possible as a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation.

Snowpack Structure

In some regions 70 to 120 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, has fallen since Monday above approximately 1800 m. Here a lot of snow is lying for the time of year. The sometimes storm force wind has transported a lot of snow. In the vicinity of peaks snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. The new snow of last week is lying on surface hoar in some places above the tree line. In some places various wind slab layers are lying on the soft surface of an old snowpack. Performed ECTs and field observations have confirmed the existence of a weak snowack.

Tendency

The weather will be mild. Midday and afternoon: Significant increase in danger of dry and moist avalanches as a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation.
