Avalanche Activity

In places where a lot of snow falls danger level 4 (high) will be reached in the course of the day.

Over a wide area 40 to 60 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, will fall until the evening above approximately 1900 m. The snowpack will become unstable in particular on steep slopes. As a consequence of new snow and a moderate to strong wind from southeasterly directions, precarious wind slabs will form in the course of the day in particular in gullies and bowls as well as above the tree line. On steep slopes and on wind-loaded slopes the likelihood of avalanches is high. The sleet will give rise to moistening of the snowpack below approximately 1800 m. At lower altitudes and on very steep slopes small to medium-sized gliding avalanches and moist snow slides are possible as the penetration by moisture increases.

Snowpack Structure

40 to 60 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, will fall until the evening above approximately 1900 m. The large quantity of fresh snow and the wind slabs that are forming during the snowfall will be deposited on a crust in particular on sunny slopes above approximately 2000 m. They are bonding poorly with the old snowpack at high altitude.
