Persistent weak layer problem in the northern sector!

The avalanche danger is assessed as low. The main issue is the persistent weak layer problem. New fallen snow (approx. 10cm) covers the avalanche prone locations. Poor visibility means that the avalanche danger can only be assessed to a limited extent. The few avalanche prone locations are in the northern sector. Snow slabs can be triggered here if there is a large additional load.

Some new fallen snow covers the partly hard old snowpack. On the north side, the old snowpack has also been transformed. The old snowpack is weakened by the kinetic metamorphism (angular shapes). Still little snow.

In the night to Thursday, precipitation from an Italian low will spread to Styria from the south. The snowfall level drops from 1200 metres to the valleys in the morning.

It will mostly remain cloudy all day on Thursday and it may snow lightly, occasionally even moderately, until around midday. In the afternoon it will be mostly free of precipitation. Moderate north-westerly wind. The temperature at an altitude of 2000 metres will be between -5 and -0 degrees. Moderate winds with gusts around 30 km/h from the southeast to northwest. The snowfall level will be between the valleys and around 600 metres above sea level. Amounts of new snow of up to 10 cm are expected.

No change in the avalanche danger is expected.
