You can easily trigger an avalanche where you find a cohesive slab on top of weak snow near the ground. You are most likely to encounter this dangerous combination on wind-drifted terrain features near and above treeline. While most of these avalanches will be small, some could grow large enough to bury you on the most wind-loaded slopes. Safer travel options exist on southwest-facing slopes or on wind-sheltered slopes where your skis, feet, or machine sink through the snow close to the ground.
