You can trigger an avalanche where you find firm wind-drifted snow. Plenty of snow is available for transport, so look for rounded pillows on east-facing aspects. If the snow cracks under your weight, head to wind-sheltered terrain or lower-angle slopes. It is getting less likely you will trigger a deeper avalanche. You can reduce the chance of this further by checking you are traveling on slopes with a consistently deep snowpack close to 2 meters.
