Highlights

Wind-affected snow should be easy to find and likely to trigger on slopes steeper than 35 degrees Wednesday.  We have no recent information from above treeline after several days of strong to extreme winds and significant precipitation.  Factor in an extra margin of safety by avoiding travel in or beneath large avalanche paths connected to the upper mountain.

    Relentless winds will finally take a day off on Wednesday after roughly 3 straight days of strong to extreme westerly winds near and above treeline.  Wind-affected snow should be easy to find in every elevation band on Wednesday. Wind slabs likely formed further below ridgelines and even on open slopes below treeline. Conversely, exposed ridgelines and steep windward faces may be stripped to an icy crust or exposed rocks.  Avoid all wind-loaded slopes steeper than 35 degrees Wednesday where you are likely to trigger a wind slab avalanche. 

    Exiting this storm cycle, we don't have any fresh observations from above treeline, leaving us with uncertainty surrounding the potential for very large avalanche releasing from higher elevation start zones.  Plan your route to avoid exposure to large avalanche paths that start high on the mountain. 

    (12/12/2020) Bennett Ridge. A shooting crack in a thick deposit of wind drifted snow is a warning sign you could trigger an avalanche on nearby slopes.

    Any steep sunny slope that was sheltered by the wind and has loose snow may produce wet loose avalanches on Wednesday.  If you start to see signs of increasing wet snow instability, like roller balls or pinwheeling, or snow shedding below sunny rock faces,  move to shady aspects or lower angle terrain.  Wet loose avalanches may run faster or further than you expect above a  crust below the new snow. With increasing high clouds expected in the afternoon, the wet loose avalanches will be most likely late morning through mid-day.

Avalanche Discussion

For elevations below 7000', we have fair confidence that avalanche activity will likely be confined to the new snow that has accumulated since Monday night, likely on the order of 8-14" of snow by Wednesday morning in non-wind affected areas.  A freezing rain crust that formed Monday was observed up to this elevation on Tuesday.  Mt Hood Meadows pro-patrol reported large wind slab avalanches near treeline on north through east aspects Monday.  We have no information from the upper mountain following several days of strong-extreme west winds.  Mt Hood Meadows picked up about 3.5" of water from Sunday night through Tuesday afternoon. 

During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, continue to follow the latest guidance from local, state, and federal health officials. Avoid unnecessary risks that could impact first responders and stress medical resources.  Wear a mask when appropriate, practice social distancing, and consider recreating closer to home.
