Snowpack

In the north, the snowpack is favourable. Dry avalanches can only be triggered very occasionally and mainly in near-surface layers. In southern Valais, Ticino and Grisons, there are faceted layers deeper in the snowpack. In the last few days, however, only a few slab avalanches have been triggered by human activity there.

On southern slopes, the snowpack is water-saturated up into the high Alpine regions, while on eastern and western slopes, the majority is water-saturated up to around 2600 m. North-facing slopes are water-saturated up to around 1800 m, with the surface moist up to around 2400 m.

During the mostly overcast night into Sunday, the snowpack will cool only slightly. This means that the danger of wet and gliding avalanches will increase rapidly during the day in the north despite little sunshine. In areas with a weak snowpack structure, moist slab avalanches can also be triggered by human activity in some places.

Weather forecast to Sunday

In the northeast there will be foehn-like bright spells, but otherwise it will be cloudy. Some precipitation will fall in the south and during the day in the west as well. The snowfall level will be around 2400 m, dropping to 2000 m in the south.

Fresh snow

Until Sunday afternoon, the following amounts of snow will fall above approximately 2500 m:

• Main Alpine Ridge from the Great St Bernard Pass to the Bernina region and south of there: 5 to 10 cm.
• Otherwise less than 5 cm or dry

Temperature

At midday at 2000 m, between +5 °C in the north and +1 °C in the south

Wind

• Moderate southerly wind
• Foehn wind in the valleys of the north.

After a clear night, it was initially sunny and mild. During the course of the day, clouds moved in from the west.

At midday at 2000 m, +9 °C in the north and +6 °C in the south

• Light to moderate northwesterly wind during the night
• Moderate to strong southerly wind during the day and moderate foehn wind in the valleys of the north

In the north it will be mild with foehn-like bright spells, especially in the northeast. Otherwise it will be very cloudy with some precipitation, falling as snow above approximately 2300 m. Most of the snowfall will be in the south, which will see 5 to 10 cm. There will be a moderate southerly wind.

The danger of dry avalanches will increase slightly in the south, otherwise it will not change significantly. Wet avalanches are still possible.

Tuesday

With a strong foehn wind at times, it will be partly sunny and mild in the north. It will be very cloudy on the Main Alpine Ridge and south of it, and 15 to 30 cm of snow is expected to fall above 2300 m, especially from the Simplon region to Val Poschiavo. However, the quantities are still uncertain. An increasingly strong southerly wind will blow at high altitudes.

The danger of dry avalanches will increase significantly in the south. In the other regions, it may rise slightly in the high Alpine regions. Wet avalanches are still possible, especially in the north.
