Regions: Glacier.

The beautiful clear skies today and into the weekend may inspire you to venture into larger alpine features. Today is the day to be critical of your route selection, and be aware of the effect of the sun on the snow.

Avalanche Problems

Storm Slabs

The storm snow from last week is largely becoming settled, however sporadic large avalanches are still failing from alpine start zones. In sheltered areas, this snow is producing large sluffs in steep terrain.

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: All elevations.

Likelihood: Possible

Expected Size: 1 - 3

Storm Slabs

Today is the first warm, clear, sunny day in weeks. On solar aspects, the sun may weaken surface snow creating sluffs or slab releases; and in the alpine, it may weaken cornices. Be cautious of alpine features that have not yet slid.

Aspects: North, North East, East, South East.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood: Likely

Expected Size: 1 - 3

Cornices

Sustained southerly-SW winds have formed large cornices capable of triggering deep layers and large avalanches.

Aspects: North, North East, East, South East, South.

Elevations: Alpine.

Likelihood: Possible

Expected Size: 3 - 4
