Regions: Kananaskis.

10-15cm of snow is forecast to fall over the next 36hrs with strong winds and warm temps. New windslabs will be quick to build and we will also see a new persistent surface hoar layer begin to get buried up to treeline.

Confidence

Moderate -

Weather Forecast

An approaching frontal system will give us 10-15cm of snow by mid day on Jan 1. This new snow is forecast to fall under the influence of moderate to strong SW winds and warmer temperatures.

Avalanche Summary

No new avalanches observed.

Snowpack Summary

Surface hoar up to 1cm big in some places is being found up to 2300m. In alpine areas, the strong winds have mainly layed it flat but there may be some isolated pockets to be mindful of. This layer will become buried over the next 24hrs. As the load gets bigger on this interface it will begin to become a problem. Otherwise expect to encounter windslabs up to 40cm deep on lee aspects in the alpine and that pesky basal facet interface that if triggerred, will result in a wide destructive avalanche.

Terrain and Travel

  • Avoid slopes that sound hollow or drum-like.
  • Be especially cautious as you transition into wind affected terrain.
  • Conditions may have improved, but be mindful that deep instabilities are still present.
