Highlights

Mountain temperatures are starting out cooler than yesterday morning, and the threat of wet slides will be significantly reduced. At the mid and upper elevations, skiers and riders could trigger small to large wind slabs in steep, avalanche prone terrain where precipitation mainly occurred in the form of snow. As the day warms and mountain snow/valley rain continues, the likelihood of triggering these slabs will increase, and the chance for shallow wet slides could develop at the mid and lower elevations. Continue to be wary of terrain where the winter snowpack is transitioning to springtime conditions.

    At the mid and upper elevations, backcountry travelers could trigger wind slabs up to two feet in depth in steep, wind-loaded terrain. Continued precipitation and warming temperatures will increase the likelihood of triggering these slabs as the day progresses.

Avalanche Discussion

Convective snow showers will bring periods of moderate snowfall to the mountains overnight. Additional accumulations of 4 to 8 inches are possible, especially in the higher elevations of the Teton Range. Skies will be partly sunny on Monday with decreasing snow showers. Temperatures at 10,000 feet will be in the teens in the morning and rise into the upper 20s during the day. Valley temperatures will be in the mid-20s in the morning and rise into the 40s during the day. Westerly winds will decrease to 15 to 20 miles per hour.The general avalanche hazard is expected to be LOW below an elevation of 8,000 feet. At the upper elevations the general avalanche hazard is expected to be MODERATE in the Togwotee Pass and Greys River areas and CONSIDERABLE in the Teton Range. At the upper elevations soft slab avalanches formed by west to west-southwest winds could be triggered by skiers and riders on steep avalanche prone slopes. These slabs could be one to two feet deep in the Togwotee Pass and Greys River areas and up to three feet deep in the Teton Range. Sunshine and rising temperatures during the day will increase the avalanche hazard.
