Recent natural avalanches and whumpfing collapses indicate slabs may be ripe for human triggering. The avalanche activity has been concnetrated on aspects shaded from the sun at mid and upper elevations.This problem will exist in areas where 8+ inches of new or drifted snow fell.
On shaded aspects, slabs rest on a layer of surface hoar and near surface facets. Slabs can be remotely triggered and can propagate wide distances. Give steep terrain a wider margin for error, specifically on west, north, and east facing slopes. The sun destroyed this weak layer on solar aspects before it was buried, and field observations generally describe a more stable snowpack structure on those aspects.
