Highlights

Today backcountry travelers will find moderate avalanche hazards throughout the forecast area. A variety of avalanche problems in specific areas continue to make it possible to trigger an avalanche up to 1 foot deep and large enough to bury a person. Depending on the area of travel users may encounter windslabs, stormslabs, or weak faceted snow.  See forecast discussion for further details reagarding the distribution of these avalanche problems.

    Snow conditions and avalanche hazards will depend on the zone, elevation, and aspects traveled through today.  In Thompson Pass recent winds from multiple directions have redistributed moderate amounts of storm snow into isolated wind slabs on leeward aspects at mid to high elevations. Windslab sensitivity to triggers is expected to be decreasing but there may be some softer and thinner pockets that could still be triggered. Windslabs will likely have 2-4 inches of recent storm snow on top making them more difficult to identify from a distance today. 

    Small amounts of recent snow in Thompson Pass and areas to the north have not yet created a storm slab hazard. It is notable, however, that the new snow is resting on a layer of surface hoar recently observed from Road level to 3800. This layer was located through Thompson Pass and areas to the North. Deeper burial of this layer could result in future avalanche problems so stay tuned for updates.

    Upper elevations in the Maritime zone have recently received up to a foot of new snow that may be sensitive to human triggers in specific areas today. Stiffer snow that has seen light to moderate wind effect will be the most sensitive.  Below 1500 feet in Maritime areas the snowpack has a poor structure with areas of faceted snow and buried eroding rain crusts. Use caution on routes that pass through steep low-elevation terrain.

Forecast Discussion:

A generally stable snowpack with a strong structure has been found throughout mid and upper elevations in our forecast area. A variety of short-lived avalanche problems in the upper foot or two of recent snow have been driving the avalanche hazard recently. These problems are not widespread and exist in isolated or specific areas only. Due to spatial variability and the presence of several types of avalanche problems, we are keeping the current hazard at moderate. Identifying the avalanche problem that applies to your area will be beneficial in reducing hazards today. 

For the next couple of days, we expect similar conditions to prevail.  Benign seasonal weather will gradually increase the strength of storm slabs and wind slabs at mid and upper elevations. Weaker snow below 1500  is expected to persist for the long term. 

Wet loose avalanches will become possible on steep low and mid-elevation solar aspects in areas that are receiving direct sun.  A wave of cloud cover that is expected to roll in from the coast along with colder temperatures will lower the likelihood of this problem being widespread today.

Additional Information:

Observations from steep upper elevations of the far northern end of the Continental zone are limited.  These areas typically harbor a weaker snowpack, however this has not been confirmed.
