Highlights

Triggering an avalanche in recent, wind-drifted snow is possible at middle and upper elevations. Watch out for softer drifts below roll-overs and other features offering protection from the strong winds. On westerly aspects, areas of drifted snow could be large, look weathered yet have the potential to slide without obvious warning signs.

    Today, be prepared for two distinct types of wind slabs. On primarily westerly slopes, expect to encounter drifted slabs formed from the 13 inches of snow received yesterday. These slabs might be large and appear aged, with a melt-freeze crust on the surface. Beneath this crust, there's likely to be soft, dry snow that may be poorly bonded to the slick, icy layer left by the previous storm. Although these slabs may not easily trigger, they aren't likely to show clear warning signs before failing at the interface between the new and old snow or within a buried weak layer. Identifying them can be challenging. Dig and investigate this interface before committing. 

    Additionally, look for new wind slabs on easterly aspects up to one foot thick formed from the snowfall last evening and continuing today. These will be easily identifiable as clean, white areas of new snow. The most reactive of these fresh wind slabs will be found in areas protected from the wind. Watch for typical warning signs like shooting cracks and snow transported by the wind at ridgelines. Performing frequent hand shear tests will aid in assessing the stability of these new slabs.

Avalanche Discussion

Following the dynamic weather conditions yesterday, the snowpack, which experienced both warming and cooling, is generally trending towards stability. However, it's important not to take this stability for granted without evaluation. Make sure to invest time in digging down to the layer where the new snow meets the old snow and assess stability carefully. Relying solely on surface observations won't provide a full understanding of the snowpack hazards today.
