New snow and transportable windspeeds have created slabs 6-10 inches thick that sit on top of weak faceted snow on Notherly, East, and some West-facing terrain. These slabs are most likely to fail on weak near surface facets or facets below crusts that lurk close to the surface. Cracking and collapsing are indicators that you've found this unstable snowpack setup. Well developed depth hoar sits a little deeper in the snowpack, so avalanches could step down into these layers in some cases, leading to larger and more destructive slides.
Last night's storm has built a slab on top of multiple concerning weak layers. In many areas the depth hoar is even closer to the surface, but the weak snow near the old snow surface is where we would expect to see any slab avalanches initially failing today.
