Weather Forecast

Tonight and Tuesday: Cold and partly cloudy conditions will prevail over the region. Winds are forecasted to be light from the NE and alpine temperatures to be around -18 C.Wednesday: Very similar conditions are expected. Partly cloudy skies, moderate winds from the NE with alpine temperatures to be -18 C.Thursday: The pattern should persist except with lighter winds from the N, clearer skies and slightly warmer temperatures.

Snowpack Summary

In the Southern part of the region, windslabs are present lee of past strong SW and W winds under ridgetop in the alpine and at treeline. The bond between these new slabs to the underlying surface is now expected to be good. Last weeks storm snow would also be sitting on a surface hoar layer on N aspects below treeline. Below 1200 m, very icy conditions exist with thin coverage.In the Northern part of the region, 5-10 cm of light snow is sitting over various surfaces, hard windslabs in the alpine, suncrust on S aspects, surface hoar in sheltered areas and facets on N aspect at treeline. There continues to be a concern for deeply buried layers of weak facetted/depth hoar crystals, this is mostly the case on slopes with a shallow and variable snowpack in the Duffey Lake and Chilcotin areas. These deep layers haven't been reactive for some time now, but snowpack tests are still showing easy and moderate sudden collapse results in the depth hoar layer at the bottom of the snowpack. Clear and cold conditions are facetting the surface of the snow at higher elevations and at lower elevations on N aspects. Surface hoar is also growing at the surface in sheltered areas.
