Avalanche Activity

The snow sport conditions outside marked and open pistes are to some extent precarious.

As a consequence of new snow and stormy weather individual natural avalanches are possible as the day progresses, even medium-sized ones. Avalanche prone locations for dry avalanches are to be found in particular on steep west, north and east facing slopes above the tree line, also on steep shady slopes in areas close to the tree line. Single winter sport participants can release avalanches very easily. The avalanche prone locations are barely recognisable because of the poor visibility, caution is to be exercised in particular in gullies and bowls, and behind abrupt changes in the terrain, as well as at the base of rock walls. Extensive experience in the assessment of avalanche danger and great restraint are important. As a consequence of the heavy precipitation gliding avalanches and wet snow slides are to be expected, especially on steep grassy slopes below the tree line.

Snowpack Structure

Over a wide area over a wide area 30 to 60 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, will fall until Tuesday above approximately 1800 m. The snowpack will become in most cases subject to considerable local variations. The various wind slabs have bonded poorly with the old snowpack. The rain gave rise to thorough wetting of the snowpack over a wide area below approximately 1700 m.
