Avalanche Activity

Increase in avalanche danger as a consequence of new snow and wind.

As a consequence of new snow and a moderate to strong wind from northeasterly directions, further wind slabs will form from late morning. The old wind slabs of Thursday will be covered with new snow and therefore difficult to recognise. The fresh wind slabs can in some places be released, even by a single winter sport participant. In particular on steep slopes the avalanches can be released in the various wind slab layers and reach quite a large size. Backcountry touring calls for restraint.

Snowpack Structure

In some regions 10 to 15 cm of snow will fall from early morning above approximately 1600 m. As a consequence of new snow and a moderate to strong wind from northeasterly directions, further wind slabs will form. High altitudes and the high Alpine regions: Over a wide area various wind slab layers are lying on a hard crust. In particular in the vicinity of peaks snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. Faceted weak layers exist in the old snowpack in particular on shady slopes.

Tendency

As a consequence of the sometimes strong northeasterly wind the prevalence of the avalanche prone locations will increase on Monday.
