Avalanche Activity

Isolated danger zones in extremely steep terrain. Heed small fresh drifts.

Avalanche danger is low. Isolated danger zones on very steep shady slope in high alpine regions and in extremely steep terrain, where small avalanche triggerings are possible. Apart from the risks of being buried in snow masses the hazards of falling need to be taken into consideration. At intermediate and low altitudes, particularly on sunny slopes, glide-snow avalanches are still possible. Caution below glide cracks.

Snowpack Structure

Due to intermittently strong (and intensifying) westerly winds yesterday, old snow was transported in exposed high altitude and high-alpine terrain and small fresh drifts accumulated. The snowpack has settled well for the most part and is stable widespread. Weak layers in the old snowdrifts and near the uppermost melt-freeze crusts as well as at mid-level of the snowpack can be triggered only in isolated cases in shady steep terrain and in high alpine regions. On the weekend, many descents were undertaken in backcountry touring and freeriding terrain, and no avalanches were triggered.

Weather Synopsis

In the northern regions heavily overcast and foggy, intermittent light snowfall. Further south no precipitation and a chance of a few windows of sunshine this afternoon. Temperature at 2000 m: -6 degrees. Moderate W/NW winds, stronger in high alpine regions.

Tendency

Avalanche danger could rise slightly in northern regions during the daytime, depending on fresh snow and wind. All in all, conditions will remain favorable.
