You can trigger an avalanche within the new snow on many slopes. Most of these will be small, but on some slopes, especially on wind-loaded and north-facing slopes, they may grow large enough to bury you or break into deeper weak layers, becoming large and destructive avalanches. Wind-sheltered terrain at lower elevations and slopes facing the southern half of the compass offer safer travel options.
