Avalanche danger
Highlights
An avalanche warning remains in effect. Dangerous avalanche conditions exist and travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended. Natural and artificially released avalanche activity has been widespread. Up to 37 inches of new snow with around 3.5 inches of moisture has fallen during the past 48 hours and the Rendezvous Bowl Snow Study Plot has recorded 25 inches in the past 24 hours. Last night a slide released naturally in Rocky Gulch and impacted the highway over Teton Pass. Yesterday avalanche crown depths were generally in the two to four foot range. Similar but larger events are likely today. Natural avalanche activity remains likely and the potential for humans to trigger large dangerous avalanches is very likely. Crown depths up to six feet deep are possible.

The next storm system is rapidly approaching and is expected to start warm and finish cold. Areas of light snowfall will develop and increase in intensity after midnight. Periods of moderate to heavy snowfall will occur on Saturday. New snow accumulations of 8 to 16 inches with some favored areas receiving up to 24 inches are expected during the next 24 hours. Southwest winds at 20 to 30 with gusts to 40 miles per hour will accompany this snowfall. Temperatures in the mountains will rise from overnight lows in the upper teens into the upper 20s. Valley temperatures will be in the lows to mid 30s. The general avalanche is HIGH at all elevations and an avalanche warning remains in effect. The new snow, mild temperatures and strong winds will negatively impact an unstable snowpack. Dangerous avalanche conditions exist. Natural avalanches and human triggered slab avalanches are likely at all elevations and on a variety of aspects. Small avalanches are certain and many medium and some large avalanches are likely. Slabs depths to six feet are likely for some of the medium and large avalanches. The large events could deposit huge volumes of debris in avalanche run-out zones. Travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended.
