Avalanche Summary

We haven't received reports of new avalanches in the past few days. Looking forward, it remains possible for riders to trigger wind slabs in steep, lee terrain features. Check out this most recent conditions update from the Field Team.

Snowpack Summary

10 to 20 cm of recent snow overlies hard surfaces. This soft snow may be redistributed into wind slabs in exposed areas by southwest winds.

The mid and lower snowpack is generally strong. A thick, well-bonded melt-freeze crust is approximately 30 to 50 cm above the ground at elevations below 1200 m.

Snowpack depths range from 80 to 200 cm across the region and vary locally from wind distribution.

Sunday

Increasing clouds with no precipitation, southwest alpine wind 20 to 30 km/h, treeline temperature -15 °C.

Mostly cloudy with a trace of snow, southwest alpine wind 20 to 40 km/h, treeline temperature -10 °C.

Tuesday

Partly cloudy with no precipitation, north alpine winds 20 to 40 km/h, treeline temperature -20 °C.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Carefully evaluate big/extreme terrain features before committing to them, it may not be full "go" time yet.
  • Seek out sheltered terrain where new snow hasn't been wind-affected.

Problems

Wind Slabs

Wind Slab avalanches are the release of a cohesive layer of snow (a slab) formed by the wind. Wind typically transports snow from the upwind sides of terrain features and deposits snow on the downwind side. Wind slabs are often smooth and rounded and sometimes sound hollow, and can range from soft to hard. Wind slabs that form over a persistent weak layer (surface hoar, depth hoar, or near-surface facets) may be termed Persistent Slabs or may develop into Persistent Slabs.
