Weather Forecast

Sunday is looking similar to Saturday but perhaps just a bit more wind at the upper elevations and cloud. Be sure to check the weather stations as there have been weak inversions the past few days with upper elevation temps 10deg C warmer than the valley floor.  

Avalanche Summary

A few loose dry avalanches on solar aspects up to sz 1. 

Snowpack Summary

Surface hoar growth and surface facetting is widespread below 2000m due to the cold temperatures and clear nights. Otherwise the upper snowpack is generally low density with a well settled midpack. Concerns regarding the basal facets and crusts will be with us for the season so we will almost always be telling people to avoid travelling in thinner shallow snowpack areas especially in steeper terrain.  

Terrain and Travel

  • Avoid areas where the snow feels stiff and/or slabby.
  • Be alert to conditions that change with elevation and wind exposure.

Problems

Wind Slabs

Wind Slab avalanches are the release of a cohesive layer of snow (a slab) formed by the wind. Wind typically transports snow from the upwind sides of terrain features and deposits snow on the downwind side. Wind slabs are often smooth and rounded and sometimes sound hollow, and can range from soft to hard. Wind slabs that form over a persistent weak layer (surface hoar, depth hoar, or near-surface facets) may be termed Persistent Slabs or may develop into Persistent Slabs.
