Observers reported wind-affected snow at mid and upper elevations around Snoqualmie Pass on Monday. With continued snowfall and wind, unstable drifts and slabs may increase in both size and frequency across the zone on Tuesday. Look for unstable drifts in common locations such as below ridgelines, along cliff bands, and on exposed leeward-facing slopes. However, with the strong winds, loading may also occur in less typical areas, such as lower on slopes, between tree islands, and along the sides of gullies. The recently formed crust (the 3/8 crust) beneath the new snow could allow for avalanches to slide easier than usual.
Using visual clues to identify and avoid potentially wind-loaded terrain will be your best tool for managing this problem. Wind-scoured surfaces, deeply drifted pockets, sharp wind lips, and fresh cornices are all good indicators of wind loading nearby. If you start to see these features, stick to sheltered or lower-angle terrain.
