The Blues have received 4" of new snow overnight. Today, the Blues are going to get an additional 5-6" of new snow , but snow levels in the Blues this morning are hovering around 5000'. This means a significant portion of the precipitation that is coming down this morning is in the form of rain. Rain on snow is a double wammy, as it adds weight (which is stress) to the snowpack and also decreases strength (by weakening the bonds between the snow grains and the different layers). Rain on snow is quick to breed instability. It also creates an inverted snowpack structure with wet heavy snow sitting atop lighter density snow. This also creates instability in the snowpack.
At elevations below 5000' natural avalanches are possible and human-triggered avalanches are likely. The new snow is not bonding well to the underlying snow surface. The weak interface consists of slick melt-freeze crusts on slopes facing the sun that got a substantial amount of heat late last week, and on W-N-E aspects there could be a reactive layer of buried surface hoar to contend with. The best way to avoid triggering a storm slab avalanche is to avoid avalanche terrain. Stay off and out from underneath slopes >30 degrees. Practice conservative travel techniques by spreading out and only have one rider on the slope at a time.
