Highlights

You may be able to trigger wet loose avalanches in steep terrain today as the day warms. Be aware of the consequences of where a small slide could take you. If you, or your machine, are sinking more than a few inches into wet snow, steer clear of slopes steep enough to slide. Avoid travelling on top of or directly below cornices.

    Warmer overnight temperatures and continued clear skies today will destabilize the snow surface more rapidly than yesterday. Human-triggered or natural wet loose avalanches will be possible in very steep terrain later in the day. Triggering these avalanches will most likely be on aspects not due south-facing, as most of these slopes have either consolidated well and have little snow for entrainment or loosening, or are bare. Wet snow avalanches today may generally be smaller, but some could entrain enough snow to bury or injure a person. Sinking deeply into wet, slushy snow indicates that conditions are becoming unstable, and it is time to move away from steep terrain. An early start and exit from the mountains is the best way to manage wet snow problems today. 

    Rockier terrain sheltered from the wind will heat up more quickly, and additionally, areas below or near cornices should be avoided. Spring is a particularly important time to know what's above you.

A note on wet slabs:

I observed weak snow near the base of the snowpack on an upper-elevation northerly aspect two days ago. This is where we had our deep persistent slab problem for the majority of the season (i.e., windswept, rockier N-facing terrain that remained variably shallow to very deep in spots). I also noted meltwater that has moved throughout the snowpack and refrozen in various locations throughout the snowpack. As surface snow starts to warm up and melt, water moves in long, snaking veins within the snowpack and can weaken this weaker snow. Though conditions do not bode for this type of avalanche problem today, it's worth noting these spots still exist. The most likely scenario is that these slopes melt out and we see a few larger surface snow avalanches. However, if large spikes in temperature happen later this spring—variably shallow, N-facing terrain may be best avoided.

Use extra caution around cornices. These hold the potential to trigger a much deeper avalanche here. Many observers have noticed cracks near larger cornices where these beasts are peeling away from steep ridgelines.
