Highlights

New snow and wind could create unstable slabs on wind-loaded terrain near and above treeline. Blowing snow, textured surfaces, and cracking underfoot are all signs you've found the problem. Stick to low-angle slopes or sheltered terrain to avoid triggering avalanches.

    We expect strong southwest winds and up to 6 inches of new snow in favored areas today. The chance for larger and more reactive wind slabs will increase where the most snow accumulates. Watch for blowing snow, fresh cornices, and shooting cracks in stiff, textured surface snow. The leeward sides of ridgelines, gullies, and cross-loaded depressions will be the areas of greatest concern. Assess snow totals and drifting as you travel. Move to lower-angled, sheltered slopes without overhead hazards to limit your exposure.

Avalanche Discussion

The most new snow is forecast for higher elevations near the Crest, and from Mammoth, north. New snow will fall on crusts, wind board, and snow from the 28th. Crusts on northerly slopes have dry, weak sugary facets beneath them. Many surfaces have a thin layer of near surface facets on the snow surface. The limiting factor for avalanche activity today will be how much new snow falls. Continued localized assessements will be key in managing today's hazard. Keep in mind that even a small avalanche above a terrain trap, or in extreme terrain, can have elevated consequences.
