Highlights

Temperature inversions are well established. At the higher elevations warmer temperatures and sunshine will be increasing the potential for humans to trigger slab avalanches on steep terrain features. Wet sloughs are also possible on steep sunlit aspects. At the lower elevations the snowpack is mostly stable. Monitor conditions for increasing hazard from this warm up and move off of and out from under steep slopes if warming conditions are significantly impacting the stability of the snowpack.

    Slab avalanches could be triggered by humans travelers in chutes, cliff areas, beneath cornices and in steep avalanche starting zones. These slabs could have depths of one to three feet. At the lower elevations isolated pockets of slab up to a foot in depth may be able to be human triggered on steep terrain features. Today's sunshine and rising temperatures are likely to increase the sensitivity of these slabs to human triggers.

Avalanche Discussion

Cloud cover will dissipate overnight, and mostly sunny skies are in store for Saturday. Overnight lows in the mountains will be near zero before rebounding to around 30 degrees in the afternoon. After lows in the single digits, the valleys will climb into the upper 30s in the afternoon. Southwesterly to westerly ridgetop winds will ranged from 10 to20 miles per hour.The general avalanche hazard is expected to be Moderate above 8,000 feet. In avalanche prone terrain, skiers and riders still have some potential to trigger slab avalanches with depths ranging from one to three feet. As the day progresses, warming temperatures and sunshine will make these slabs more susceptible to failure, and shallow wet slides could occur on sunlit slopes. Below 8,000 feet, the snowpack will be mostly stable in the morning before the chance for small wet slides develops on sunlit aspects in the afternoon. Monitor warming temperatures and the sun’s impact on snow surfaces, and transition to shaded terrain when snow surfaces start to become damp.
