Storm snow from the last two days is denser on top and softer beneath - an upside down configuration. Warmer temperatures are contributing to the settlement and consolidation of this new snow but also making it more cohesive and slab-like. This snow sits atop a widespread, crumbly rime crust and weak layer. It is possible for the weight of a skier or snowmobiler to awaken this instability. Evaluate snow carefully if venturing onto steep, unsupported slopes. Natural avalanches are unlikely, but human triggered avalanches are possible.
As you transition to higher elevations, wind effects will begin dominate. Slabs will be thicker, harder, and limited to more leeward terrain. The rime crust will dissappear and the main concern will be how well snow is bonding to the old, wind-hardened snow surface that existed on Sunday. Winds have been consistently out of the southwest and west. Leeward terrain will tend to be easterly facing, but winds fluctuate as they flow over complex terrain. Pay attention to where wind has been transporting snow. Stomp on small cornices and roll-overs in safe terrain. If you see blocking or shooting cracks, avoid steep slopes nearby. Warming temperatures and rising snow levels could weaken bonds within these slabs making them easier to knock loose.
