Snowpack

• South of a line from the Rhône to the Rhine, the near-surface layers of the snowpack are shaped by the wind, especially in the vicinity of ridgelines and passes. Especially in areas with little snow in the south and east, the entire snowpack has become faceted in places. Isolated avalanches may be triggered in weak layers. On the central part of the Main Alpine Ridge in Valais between the Dufourspitze and the Nufenen Pass as well as on the central part of the southern flank of the Alps, the little new snow that has fallen over the last two days is lying on a heavily faceted, often thin snowpack. Avalanches may be triggered in the weak snowpack, especially on western, northern and eastern slopes.
• North of a line from the Rhône to the Rhine and in the extreme west of Lower Valais, the snowpack is strongly shaped by the wind in many places. Only on shady slopes sheltered from the wind are there still loose, angular crystals on the surface, sometimes with surface hoar. The middle part of the snowpack is also often well consolidated and therefore there is little expectation that avalanches will be triggered deep in the old snowpack.

A few more snowflakes will fall during the night in the south above 1200 metres. During the day, it will be sunny in all regions in the mountains.

It snowed lightly in the south. The snowfall level was around 1000 m. It was quite sunny in the north.

From Saturday evening to Monday afternoon above 1500 m:

• Main Alpine Ridge in Upper Valais along the border with Italy from the Saas Valley to the Binntal, Val Bedretto, upper Valle Maggia: 10 to 20 cm
• Other regions of the Main Alpine Ridge in Upper Valais and the central part of the southern flank of the Alps, Val Bregaglia, Bernina region: 5 to 10 cm; elsewhere: less or it remained dry.

Wind

Mostly light to moderate, at high altitude sometimes strong from southerly directions.

OutlookWednesday

On Wednesday it will still be quite sunny in Grisons, otherwise often cloudy. There may be some showers in the west and south, especially in the afternoon. In the west, the snowfall level will be between 1600 and 1800 metres. The wind will be light to moderate, with a sometimes strong southwesterly wind in the afternoon. In the foehn valleys of the north, there will be an increasingly moderate to strong foehn wind blowing from the south.

The avalanche danger will continue to decrease slowly.

Thursday

There will be widespread precipitation. Most of this will fall in the extreme west and northern parts of Lower Valais, with about 15 to 30 cm new snow expected. In the west, the snowfall level will initially be around 1800 metres during the night and then rapidly fall towards 1200 to 1400 metres. In the late morning, the precipitation will end and it will become sunny in parts, especially in the west and south. There will be strong to stormy southwesterly winds during the night, easing during the day.

The avalanche danger will increase across the board, especially in Lower Valais. With the rain, wet avalanches are possible in the west during the night.
