Snowpack

On Monday, snowdrift accumulations formed at high altitude. Some of these are still prone to triggering. In addition, on slopes that are largely protected from the wind, last week's snow is lying on an angular weak layer. There may be human-triggered avalanches in these upper layers of the snowpack. Otherwise, the snowpack structure is mostly favourable, and fractures deeper in the snowpack are not expected.

Medium-sized and sometimes large gliding avalanches are still possible, except on the southern flank of the Alps.

There will be precipitation intermittently during the night in the north. During the night the snowfall level will temporarily rise to 2600 m in the west; elsewhere it will be around 2000 m. During the day it will be very cloudy in the north and partly clear in the inneralpine regions. It will be dry and fairly sunny in the south.

New snow

Above 2500 m in the Bernese Alps, 5 to 10 cm of new snow is expected; elsewhere, there will be a few centimetres of new snow or it will remain dry.

Temperature

At midday at 2000 m, around +2 °C.

Wind

There will be strong, sometimes storm-force, winds from the west to northwest on the northern flank of the Alps and generally at high altitude.

Snow fell widely in the north during the night, while it remained dry in the south. The snowfall level dropped rapidly from 1800 m to 1200 m. During the day it was sunny in the south and partly cloudy elsewhere.

New snow

From Monday afternoon to Tuesday midday, the following amounts of fresh snow were registered above 2000 m:

• Northern Alpine Ridge, extreme west of Lower Valais: 15 to 30 cm;
• other regions of the northern flank of the Alps and Valais, northern Grisons, Bedretto: 5 to 15 cm;
• elsewhere: less; mostly dry on the southern flank of the Alps.

Temperature

At midday at 2000 m, between -4 °C in the north and 0 °C in the south.

Wind

Winds were moderate to strong, sometimes storm force at high altitude, from the west to northwest.

TrendThursday and Friday

During Wednesday night into Thursday, some snow will fall in the north above 1500 to 2000 m. It will remain dry in the south. Thursday and Friday will be fairly sunny in the west and south, while in the east it will be mostly cloudy with some snowfall on Thursday. It will remain dry in the south. There will be strong, sometimes storm-force, westerly to northwesterly winds at high altitudes.

There will be hardly any change in the avalanche danger. Snowdrift accumulations represent the main danger. Gliding avalanches are still possible.
